When discussing about parental leave, I personally can’t understand fathers who don’t use the opportunity to stay at home. Having grown in an equal household myself, where housework and taking care of the children were divided as evenly as possible, I’ve always taken for granted that my spouse would want to be equal with me as well. Housework or taking care of the children are not “women’s work”, they are a part of everyday life of that particular family and couple. Thank heavens I have found a spouse who shares my views :)
That is why it was very interesting to hear, that couples without children usually share their housework quite evenly, but when the woman stays at home (on maternity leave or parental leave) she ends up doing the majority of the housework. This unbalanced situation continues even after the leave is over and does not get corrected, not even after long periods of time. In those families, where the father stays at home to take care of the child (even briefly), this kind of distortion on the amount of housework does not happen so strongly. Because most of the rows couples have are about housework, it would be crucial to get the fathers to get excited about the idea of staying at home and taking care of the child. Perhaps this way the relationships would flourish more, couples would divorce less and children would be happier, perhaps even more children might be born – it could create a real chain of happiness :)
There is something to ponder about, for all of us :)
