Your refresments served to you in a large garden

Happy anniversary, Eggs, Beans and Crumpets! Our blog has survived for five years, which we consider to be a quite achievement. There have been times of inactivity, but somehow we have allways managed to carry on.

Pictured above is Phalaenopsis amabilis celebrating our special day - it has been flowering through the winter..

Hyvää perustamispäivää, Eggs, Beans and Crumpets! Blogimme on sinnitellyt elossa jo viisi kokonaista vuotta, mikä on meistä hieno saavutus. Välillä on hiljaiseloa vietetty pitkiäkin toveja, mutta silti aina vaan jaksamme jatkaa.

Kuvassa merkkipäiväämme juhlistaa Phalaenopsis amabilis, joka on kukkinut läpi talven..

You have nudist views?

"Some time before, when he had found it impossible for him to be in her presence, still less to converse with her, without experiencing a warm, clammy, shooting sensation and a feeling of general weakness similar to that which follows a well-directed blow at the solar plexus, he had come to the conclusion that he must be in love."
Exactly five years ago we went on our first date. That night eight-year friendship changed into love..

Päivälleen viisi vuotta sitten menimme ensitreffeille. Tuona iltana kahdeksan vuoden ystävyys muuttui rakkaudeksi..

A few days off

In the swimming hall, which had opened again after a summer break. An old lady talks to an equally old man.

Woman says later to her lady friend: “It’s always so nice to see these old ones, who come here regularly. You know then, that they have survived.”

Uimahallissa, sen auettua taas kesätauon jälkeen. Vanha nainen keskustelee vanhan miehen kanssa.

Nainen sanoo myöhemmin naisystävälleen: "Se on aina niin kiva nähdä näitä vanhoja, jotka käyvät täällä vakituisesti. Tietää, että ne ovat selvinneet tauon yli."

You were, were you?

Pictured above our latest treat: wheat baguette, which recipe we acquired from Finnish food and wine magazine Glorian ruoka&viini. Even though it takes two days from start to finish to make it, it's absolutely worth that effort..

Kuvassa viime aikojen suosikkiherkkumme:vehnäpatonki, jonka reseptin poimimme Glorian ruoka&viini lehdestä. Vaikka kaiken kaikkiaan leivän alusta loppuun saamiseen meneekin kaksi vuorokautta, on se täysin vaivan arvoista..

A little talk with you, young man

Of the importance of play.

Small boy and his father discussing in a tram.
Boy: "I don't have enough time to build my Legos."
Father: "You had time yesterday, one hour before sauna and one hour after the sauna."
Boy: "Yes, but that is not enough."
-----

Sam Marlowe: "The day after today."
Arnie Rogers: "That's yesterday. Today's tomorrow."
Sam Marlowe: "It was."
Arnie Rogers: "When was tomorrow yesterday, Mr Marlowe?"
Sam Marlowe: "Today."
Arnie Rogers: "Oh, sure. Yesterday."

Such harmony is in immortal souls

Optimism?

Date night, dinner & movies. We are walking home in the darkening autumn night and walk past a drunken, middle-aged man.

Man yells behind us: "Never, never get married!"
Crumpet shouts back at him: "We already are!"
And the man still continues behind us: "No, no, it never works.."
-----
Optimismia?

Treffi-ilta, päivällinen & leffa. Kävelemme kotiin pimenevässä syysillassa ja matkalla ohitamme humaltuneen, keski-ikäisen miehen.

Mies huutaa peräämme: "Älkää, älkää koskaan menkö naimisiin!"
Crumpet huikkaa miehelle takaisin: "Me ollaan jo!"
Johon mies huutaa vielä peräämme: "Ei, ei, se ei koskaan toimi.."

Not a single, solitary suspicion of a hat

I've been blessed (or cursed?) with wild imagination and world of dreams. In my dreams I (for excample) fly, speak several languages (that in reality I don't speak), hear music and improvise on the music I've heard (sometimes the music is just a backround to the events in the dreams:)), experience natural disasters, have travelled beyond our reality, see traditional animation and puppetoons and movie dreams (where the angles and the editing of the dream are like in a movie). I've also seen premonition dreams of the dying.

When I wake up I always remember at least the last dream of mine, sometimes many dreams I've dreamt that night.

Sometimes after an eventful dream night one wakes up excited and refreshed, inspired by all the things one has encountered. Sometimes it's difficult to wake up and one feels drained, after everything one has gone through. The way I see it is that I have two lives - one that I experince when awake and one when I'm dreaming - both of them inseparable parts of me.

------

Bright and early

Morning sunshine in my eyes, I squint.
Underneath a new, black Citroën (borrowed).
Eläintarhanlahti is calm, reflecting on its surface the light blue of the cloudless sky.
Wonderwall is playing…and I sing along.
You there, me here, next to each other.
Shall we stay here forever?
--------------------
Aamuinen aurinko paistaa suoraan silmiin, siristelen.
Alla pörrää uusi, musta citikka (lainattu).
Eläintarhanlahti on peilityyni ja heijastaa pinnallaan pilvettömän taivaan vaalean sinen.
Wonderwall soi.. ja minä laulan mukana.
Sinä siinä, minä tässä, vierekkäin.
Ollaanko aina tässä vain?

Nights of wine and roses

I was reading P.G. Wodehouse’s book "Galahad at Blandings" the other day and the phrase ”nights of wines and roses” stuck to me..

The phrase beautifully directs ones thoughts to the saying” days of wine and roses”, which is
originally from poet Ernest Dowson and his poem:

Vit{ae} Summa Brevis Spem nos Vetet Incohare Longam

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate;
I think they have no portion in us after

We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:

Out of a misty dream

Our path emerges for a while, then closes

Within a dream.

The writer of this poem
filled with yearning and emotion, lost eternity surely knew what he was writing about..
--------------------
Luin P.G. Wodehousen kirjaa "Galahad at Blandings"ja silmääni sattui fraasi ”nights of wine and roses”, mikä jäi mieleeni kaikumaan..

Fraasi viittaa kauniisti sanontaan ”days of wine and roses”, joka on alunperin runoilija
Ernest Dowson’in (1867 - 1900) runosta peräisin:

Vit{ae} Summa Brevis Spem nos Vetet Incohare Longam

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,

Love and desire and hate;

I think they have no portion in us after

We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:

Out of a misty dream

Our path emerges for a while, then closes

Within a dream.

Tämän kaihon, katoavaisuuden ja tunteen pakahduttaman runon kirjoittaja on selvästi tiennyt, mistä hän kirjoitti...

Onnen hetket elämän, kuin
silmänräpäys,

huomaamatta

jo mennyttä.
