In spite of the floor of heaven being thick inlaid with patines of bright gold

 

Bean's employer had an anniversary this year, and management decided to reward the staff with a surprise trip. Final destination was kept secret until the departure day, we only knew that we were heading to Central Europe and that we had to equip ourselves for hiking. 

We flew to Geneva via Frankfurt, which still wasn't where we were heading - our final destination was Chamonix in France, famous among those of us who ski and those of who know where the first Winter Olympics were held - I was not part of either group. Trip turned out to be nice three day break from work. First day was spent relaxing and sightseeing the small village where our hotel was located. The day ended with nice Fondue dinner. I also had a chance to taste local digestif Génépi, which was something between Moomin soft drink and sweet liqueur. 

Day two was spent hiking. Our nice local guide lead us to "Tête de Prapators", in altitude of 1,8 km.The hike took about 6 hours all in all. After it we relaxed for couple of hours and prepared for anniversary dinner at Restaurant Atmosphére. Dinner was nice and excellent French wines complemented the food. 

On day three we took the téléphérique to Aiguille du Midi, a peak of 3,8 km. View was naturally magnificent and you could really feel the thin air, since the oxygen intake was considerably harder. After the visit it was time for some gift shopping for the folks back home (=Crumpet) and soon after we had to head to the airport. 

I will definately head back to Chamonix with lill' Crumpet during summer time for some Fondue, light hiking, swimming and great views. It's easy to reach with SNCF trains and is conveniently located on the border of France, Italy and Switzerland.

Beanin työnantaja viettää tänä vuonna merkkipäiviä ja yritys päätti palkita henkilökuntaa yllätysmatkalla. Matkan lopullinen määränpää pidettiin salassa lähtöpäivään asti, tiesimme vain että suuntaisimme Keski-Eurooppaan ja että mukaan pitäisi ottaa vaellusvarusteita. 

Lensimme Frankfurtin kautta Geneveen, mikä ei vieläkään ollut lopullinen määränpää, vaan suuntasimme Chamonixiin, Ranskaan. Chamonix on tuttu laskettelua harrastaville, sekä heille jotka tietävät, missä ensimmäiset talviolympialaiset pidettiin - itse en kuulunut kumpaankaan ryhmään. Matka osoittautui mukavaksi kolmen päivän lepohetkeksi työstä. Ensimmäinen päivä kului rentoutuessa ja tutustuessa kylään jossa hotellimme sijaitsi. Illalla söimme fondueta ja sain tilaisuuden maistaa paikallista Génépì-digestiiviä, joka oli sekoitus muumilimpparia ja makeaa likööriä. 

Toinen päivä kuluikin vaeltaessa. Mukava paikallisoppaamme johdatti meidät "Tête de Prapatorsille" noin kahden kilometrin korkeuteen. Vaellus kesti kokonaisuudessaan noin kuusi tuntia. Sen jälkeen rentouduimme muutaman tunnin ja valmistauduimme vuosipäiväillalliselle, joka nautittiin ravintola Atmosphéressä. Illallinen oli herkullinen ja erinomaiset ranskalaiset viinit komplementoivat ateriaa. 

Kolmantena päivänä nousimme kaapelihissillä Aiguille du Midin huipulle n.3,8 kilometrin korkeuteen. Maisemat olivat upeat ja ylhäällä todella huomasi, että ilma on ohuempaa, sillä hapensaanti oli huomattavasti vaikeampaa. Palattuamme alas olikin aika tehdä muutamia tuliaisostoksia kotiväelle (eli Crumpetille), jonka jälkeen suuntasimmekin takaisin lentokentälle. 

Palaan ehdottomasti takaisin Chamonixiin Pienen-Cn kanssa nauttimaan fonduesta, kevyestä patikoinnista, uimisesta ja hienoista maisemista. Chamonixiin pääsee helposti SNCF-junilla ja se sijaitsee kätevästi Ranskan, Italian ja Sveitsin rajoilla.

My co-worker, who happens to have doctorate in public administration, mentioned on our coffee break, that he has always dreamed of working in an ad agency. The reason for this is the fact that he has many great ideas for commercials..

"A group of people waits for the elevator. One of them has a shopping bag, from where a bottle of Tabasco peaks out. After seeing this, one of the people waiting refuses to enter the elevator, but instead chooses to walk the stairs. When he arrives to his floor he finds an elevator full of wet people, because the Tabasco has set the elevators sprinklers of. With a knowing look on his face he shakes his head to the person, who was carrying the Tabasco."

Maybe it's better, that he sticks with his current job..

Työtoverini, joka sattuu koulutukseltaan olemaan hallintotieteiden tohtori, mainitsi kahvitauolla, että on aina haaveillut olevansa mainostoimistossa töissä. Hän perusteli tätä sillä, että hänellä on hyviä ideoita mainoksia varten..

"Joukko ihmisiä seisoo odottamassa hissiä. Eräällä heistä on ostoskassi, josta pilkottaa Tabasco-pullo. Tämän nähtyään eräs odottajista kieltäytyy menemästä hissiin, vaan sen sijaan lähtee kiipeämään portaita. Perillä ylhäällä hän kohtaa hissillisen märkiä ihmisiä, sillä Tabasco on laukaissut hissin spriklerit. Tetäväisenä hän pudistaa päätään Tabascoa kantaneelle."

Ehkä on parempi, että hän jatkaa nykyisessä työssään..

Come on and celebrate, celebrate!

This year I have on my “list” three work related Christmas parties and two Christmas lunches. One of the Christmas parties will be held in the Government Banquet Hall and the other in The House of the Estates, so one can assume that these events will be quite festive :)

The other Christmas lunch will be held with my closest colleagues and we are heading to restaurant Wellamo, where I’ve visited a few times and liked it a lot.

So, expectations are running high, especially on part of those delicious foods… :)

Tänä vuonna listallani on työn puolesta kolmet pikkujoulut ja kaksi joululounasta. Aika juhlavaa menoa lienee luvassa, kun yhdet pikkujoulut järjestetään Valtioneuvoston juhlahuoneistossa (kotoisasti Smolnassa) ja toiset Säätytalolla :)

Toinen joululounaista pidetään ihan lähimpien työtovereiden kanssa, silloin menemme Wellamoon, jossa olen vieraillut muutaman kerran ja pitänyt siitä hurjasti.

Odotukset ovat korkealla, varsinkin kaiken herkullisen ruuan suhteen…:)

Work and play

On my lunch break I ran into two ex-co-workers, from two different jobs. It is always nice to catch up, even in the middle of the street. I really had a lovely time talking and actually laughed out loud when I heard the probably best story on – “how not to approach your boss and ask for a bigger salary, when dressed a bit inappropriately, totally drunk, in a Christmas party” :D

Lounastauolla törmäsin kahteen entiseen työkaveriin, kahdelta eri työpaikalta. On aina kiva kerrata kuulumisia, vaikka ihan kadullakin. Oli erittäin mukava jutustella ja itse asiassa sain nauraa ihan kippurassa, kun kuuntelin ehkä hauskinta juttua ikinä aiheesta ”kuinka EI kannata lähestyä esimiestä palkkatoiveen kanssa pikkujouluissa, kun olet pukeutunut hitusen arveluttavasti ja olet hippelissä” :D

Capital, capital, capital.

It’s nice to have a workplace dead in the centre of Helsinki. In the winter you can escape the sleet and the wretchedness in to Stockmann or to Wanha Kauppahalli. In both of them you can circle around and look at the “goodies” on offer.

In the summer there is Esplanadi Park, where you can have lunch picnic, even in the middle of the workday. Or Kauppatori with it’s hustle and bustle and The Helsinki Cathedral and its steers, where you can sit and eat an ice cream cone. Throughout the year you can dine in various restaurants.

Best option is if your life companion works in the same neck of the woods. Then you can enjoy each others company and have a lunch together during a workday, summer or winter.

On nastaa olla töissä Helsingin ydinkeskustassa. Talvella pääsee aina pakoon räntää ja ankeutta Stockmannille tai Vanhaan kauppahalliin. Molemmissa voi kierrellä ja katsella kaikkia "herkkuja", mitä on tarjolla.

Kesällä on Esplanadin puisto, jonne voi kesken työpäivääkin mennä lounaspiknikille. Tai Kauppatori vilskeineen ja Tuomikirkon portaat, joilla katsella maailman menoa ja syödä vaikka jäätelötötteröä. Läpi vuoden on tarjolla monenmoista syötävää erilaisissa ravintoloissa.

Parasta tietysti on, jos elämänkumppani työskentelee samoilla kulmilla. Silloin työpäivän voi katkaista yhteisellä lounaalla, kesät talvet.

Great comfort

Usein kuulee puhuttavan lohtu-ruuasta, mutta harvemmin mainitaan lounaan merkitystä lohturuokakuviossa. Mielestäni lounaalla syöty ruoka on siksi niin tärkeää, koska lounas katkaisee työpäivän, se on aikaa itselle, hemmotteluhetki..

Jos ruoka, jota syöt lounalla on pahaa, niin se voi luoda tunteen, että koko lounas ja jopa koko työpäivä menee pilalle. Toisaalta hyvä tai jopa erinomainen lounasruoka voi pelastaa huononkin työpäivän ja tehdä hyvästä työpäivästä loistavan. Crumpet tykkää lounastaa :)

Often you hear talk about comfort food, but rarely you hear lunch mentioned in this context. In my opinion lunch is important because it is a break in the middle of the day, it is time for yourself, it is a small treat..

If your lunch tastes bad, it can create a feeling that your lunch and even your workday is ruined. On the other hand good or even a great lunch can salvage a bad day and make a good day great!
I love a good lunch me :)
