I found my thoughts taking a more optimistic turn

Bean´s birthday happened to be during our recent visit to London. Crumpet had a nice idea up her sleeve, she decided to take Bean to Ritz´s Classic Afternoon Tea to celebrate the occasion (last year it was Harry´s Bar in Paris). We pondered how we shoud dress for the occasion, as it stated in the dressing code that jacket and tie was required for men, so would we be on the same level with other patrons?

Our worries were not called for, as we soon found out. Other people participating were also tourists like us and we were, or atleast we thought, the best dressed couple in the room. People seemed to have very relaxed attire, some people were wearing a combination of cargo pants with unmatching jacket and tie. Atmosphere was also relaxed and not uptight at all. Maître d’hôtel led everybody to their tables and showed where you could place your purse or bag (under the table). Waiters were very courteous, but could take also a more relaxed approach, if they found out that particular customer could appreciate it.

Large selection of teas was available naturally, after all this is afternoon tea. We decided to go with Assam, always a good choice. Bean took coffee, since they were serving dark roasted coffee, which Bean likes very much. Three level catering plates were brought to table. On the uppermost level we had assortment of pastries and in the bottom assortment of sandwiches. Scone plate was added to the middle later. Sandwich assortment consisted of cucumber, ham, smoked salmon, chicken, mature cheddar sandwiches and egg mayonnaise bridge roll. These were pretty much your basic sandwiches, Bean´s favourite was smoked salmon, Crumpet preferred the ham sandwich. Waiters were on constant look out to top up the sandwich plate, so basically this was all you can eat situation (no need to leave hungry).

After sandwiches we decided to try the warm scones, which were served with strawberry jam and clotted cream (almost butterlike cream with high fat content). These tasted a bit like Finnish raisin buns, although jam and cream were a particularly good bonus. After scones it was time to move to level three, the pastries. Ritz´s classic chocolate cake was good, as expected, with enough dark chocolate. Also tartalettes with raspberries and blueberries were delicious. A good performance, I would say, because we had spent a week and a half admiring patisseries of Paris before arriving to Ritz.
Ritz Afternoon Tea was delightful experience overall. Pianist was playing through the tea, doing classics like "As time goes by", but also rendition of "Empire state of mind" by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, which was quite fun. Palm court was beautiful with fresh flowers, as you can see from the pictures, and they had nice little touches in the serving, like non standard sugar lumps. Ritz afternoon tea was a nice peaceful experience in the midst of one of London´s busiest areas and excellent way to celebrate a birthday.

A moment before

Even as child I was quite a little gourmet and enthusiastic experimenter of new tastes. There are many delightful food memories and experiences associated with my childhood (like recently catched fish smoked on the lakeside, slowly (in a baking oven) cooked Karelian hot pot, fresh blueberries and rasberries straight fron the bushes, self-grown vegetables and berries from our own vegetable garden and so forth).

Even though I consider myself to be quite open-minded, I always thought that I would never be able to eat raw ground meat (with a raw egg). Despite my prejudice, last summer in France I ordered a steak tartare - and I was sold. It is really rewarding to try out new foods and it is interesting to realize, how one can surprise oneself - world is full of new, pleasing, unusual and diverse tastes (also strange, unidentified, grotesque and alienating tastes), but without an open mind for experience one will never know them.

Here are some food memories from the end of 1970's and the beginning of 1980's (I was about 3-4 years then).

- Porcini cooked in butter (This is my very first food memory. My mother and I collected porcini from the woods behind my grandparents' house. I remember that it was difficult to walk in the woods (because I was so small) but that it was easy for me to find the porcini (because I was so little :)). When we returned to my grandparents' house, my mother cooked the porcini in cast iron pan using only butter - and I ate like I'd never seen food before :)).
- Leipäjuusto with cloudberries (My godmother always served this as a dessert, when we visited her. She and her husband went every year to Lapland to pick cloudberries. I could never get enough of this. Perhaps this is source of my cheese enthusiasm? :))
- Pasta alla carbonara in a restaurant (This is my first visit to a restaurant, that I can remember. A new Italian restaurant had opened to my little hometown in Ostrobothnia - with red and white checkered tablecloth and all - and my parents and their friends wanted to go and try the place out. This experince left a strong impression on me, because the food tasted so very different to what I was used to eating at home, but still delicious. I was amazed!)

Seuraavassa muutamia ruokamuistoja 1970-1980 luvun taitteesta (jolloin olin siis 3-4-vuotias)

- Voissa paistetut herkkutatit (Tämä on ihan ensimmäinen ruokamuistoni.
- Pasta alla carbonara ravintolassa (Ensimmäinen kertani ravintolassa, minkä muistan. Pienelle kotipaikkakunnalleni Pohjanmaalle avattiin italialainen ravintola - punavalkoruudullisine pöytäliinoineen kaikkineen - ja vanhempani ja heidän ystävänsä halusivat mennä kokeilemaan paikkaa. Tapahtuma jäi voimakkaasti mieleeni, koska ruoka oli täysin erimakuista, mitä kotona kotonani yleensä syötiin, mutta lumoavan hyvää..Olin ihmeissäni!)

Good gracious

Barry: "It's just, I just realized, we have been really, really selfish. You see, weddings are not for the bride and groom, they are for the relatives and friends, and you know, old aunties and grannies. People sort of rely on that kind of a day. I can't deprive them of it. You know, take my auntie Lillian, for instance. I mean, probably the last time she gets out of the house."

Moxey: "So instead of the Mediterranean, you'll settle for Wolverhampton?"

Little Bean, our enthusiastic Christmas person, already got his Christmas calendar, which he had been eyeing up for couple of weeks now. How many nights until Christmas? :)

Pieni Papunen, innokas jouluihminen, sai jo haluamansa joulukalenterin, jota oli tiiraillut kaupassa jo parin viikon ajan. Montako yötä jouluun on? :)

Well, this settles it

There is slight(!) enthusiasm in the air - we are already planning Christmas :)

When we moved in together, it was obvious to us both, that from that moment forward we wanted to spend holidays between our own family. Even though there are no children in our family, we wanted to form our own traditions and (for example) spend Chrismas just the way we wanted. Our former partners wouldn't hear any of that and so holidays were spent travelling here and there, all stressed out and operated on other peoples conditions and timetables. Thanks, but no thanks!

So now we are pondering about this years Christmas decorations, foods & drinks. Our table setting will be something new of course, but the foods will probably be traditional and familiar: first the fish courses, then the Christmas ham & casseroles etc. Perhaps some cheese for afters..?

And at least one guest has agreed to come and delight our home with her presence :)

Lievää(!) innostusta havaittavissa - tulevaa joulua suunnitellaan jo B&C:n kodissa :)
