He would supply them with his waist measurements

Arthur: "Ah, dinner Italiano! Whumbaa! Aren't you having anything, sweetheart?"
Carrie: "No, I'm on a diet."
Arthur: "Ah, you kids with your dieting and your health. In my day, we dropped dead of a massive coronary in our mid-fifties and we liked it!"

A few days off

In the swimming hall, which had opened again after a summer break. An old lady talks to an equally old man.

Woman says later to her lady friend: “It’s always so nice to see these old ones, who come here regularly. You know then, that they have survived.”

Uimahallissa, sen auettua taas kesätauon jälkeen. Vanha nainen keskustelee vanhan miehen kanssa.

Nainen sanoo myöhemmin naisystävälleen: "Se on aina niin kiva nähdä näitä vanhoja, jotka käyvät täällä vakituisesti. Tietää, että ne ovat selvinneet tauon yli."

And then we got talking and something

Two men, alcoholics, in their forties.  Acquaintances.

Man 1: "You can come over, if you want to. I have food in the fridge: there's milk and bread. But my streo is a piece of crap - I only have the radio. There's also the tv, you can stare at it, but I won't watch that shit! But I warn you: one wrong movement and I'll hit a nail into your head!

Man 2 (slightly amused): "I'll come over, if you don't kill me."
----

A uniformed gentleman with a large key and a young man in a form-fitting navy blue suit emerged

From the reality of the aging women..

Woman 1: "They say there is a shortage of men.."
Woman 2: "So they say.."
Woman 1: "I have accompanied seven men to their graves in six years.."
Woman 2: "You didn't poison them, surely..?"

Ikääntyvien naisten todellisuudesta..

Nainen 2: "Et kai sä vaan myrkyttänyt niitä?"

The earth here has been recently disturbed

The death of our little animal friend Esko-the-Bunny touched us, even tough we were just his foster carers. A little bit of comfort comes from the knowledge that Esko left doing the very things he loved the most - having just eaten and jumping around in his home - and at the last moment the most important person was on his side, stroking him gently.
----

When a person is alive, they are remembered on their special occasions by cards.

But the biggest cards person gets after they're dead, ia when they are not there to appreciate it..

Sometimes not so bright

"Seventy-seven, isn't that amazing. Old people are wonderful when they have so much life, aren´t they? Gives us all hope, doesn't it? My mother on the other hand is a little bit of a trial, really. You know, it's alright when they have the life force, but mother, well, she's got more of a death force, really. She's a worrier. She has these, well, morbid fears they are, really. Vans is one. Rats, doorknobs, birds, heights, open spaces, confined spaces. It's very diffucult getting the space right for, really. Footballs, bicycles, cows. And she is always on about men following her. I don't know what she thinks they are going to do to her. Vomit on her, Basil says. And death. She's frightened of death. I told her there is nothing she can do about it, on about it the full time, she is. I mean, nature can only take its course. Only thing you can hope for is that won't be long, drawn out and painful. But she can't accept that."

Last autumn

Last autumn I saw a person die.

I was alone at home (Bean was on a trip with the lads) and I happened to look out the window, into an apartment complex next to ours. Few of the aparments had their curtains open. At first glance I thought that someone was having a budo-practice of some sort, because one of the apartments was crowded with people in white clothing (I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, as you can see). When I looked again more closely, I realized that those people were paramedics performing CPR to someone on the floor of the apartment. There were drips going into this person and all kinds of medical equipment scattered aroud.

I just stood there. Seconds felt like eternity. Then I looked to the window next to commotion. There was someone there. It was someone, in that same exact apartment, looking helplessly to the situation. It was obvious that this person had been ordered to move out of the way, so that the paramedics could do they job.

Our eyes met. I will never forget that look. We both felt so helpless. I felt horrible, I had accidently intruded their privacy. I left the window and never came back to it, just sat there, on the couch, shocked and terrified for the people next door. Even though the hole encounter had lasted perhaps only a minute, it moved the very core of my being. I called Bean, to hear his voice, to tell him I loved him.

Next morning, when I left for work, the flag of the apartment complex was in half-staff.

---------------

Katseemme kohtasivat. En tule koskaan unohtamaan sitä hetkeä. Me molemmat tunsimme olomme niin avuttomiksi.
