To Pet Or Not To Pet?

Owning a pet has different meanings to different people. A lonely person finds company in a pet, someone to talk to and cuddle. Some want a pet to keep them company in their exercises. Others want a care free pet, which is pleasing to the eye. Some see pets from practical perspective – they kill vermin or assist on hunts or guard property or people. Then there are people who see pets as a business: regardless of the species animals are “manufactured” to be sold, still unfortunately often. Some want a pet that can be presented in animal shows, to most of the owners it’s very important that their pet is successful. Others want a pet for practising on a live creature, before having children.

The thing common to all pet owners is that they all want something from the animal, even if that something is the mere fact that the animal exists, that one can observe it.. In the end, pets are always for the people, for their needs. Only a wild animal fulfils animal’s true purpose – it is there just to exist.

Despite everything it’s still a joy to pet the visiting star, Esko the Bunny, and enjoy his presence..

Lemmikin omistamisella on eri merkityksiä eri ihmisille. Yksinäinen ihminen saa lemmikistä seuraa, jonkun, jolle jutella ja jota pitää hyvänä. Toiset haluavat lemmikistä seuraa liikuntatuokioihin. Jotkut haluavat lemmikin, josta on vähän vaivaa, mutta joka on esteettinen elämys. Toisille lemmikki on myös hyötyeläin, joka hävittää tuholaiset tai toimii apuna metsästyksessä tai omaisuuden/ihmisten vahtina. On ihmisiä, joille lemmikit ovat bisnes: eläinlajista riippumatta eläimiä ”tehtaillaan” myyntiin edelleen valitettavan usein. Jotkut puolestaan haluavat lemmikin, jota käyttää eläinnäyttelyissä, useimmille heistä eläimen menestyminen on erittäin tärkeää. Toiset ottavat lemmikin ”harjoitellakseen” elävästä olennosta huolehtimista, ennen lapsen hankintaa.

Yhteistä kaikille lemmikkien omistajille on se, että kaikki haluavat eläimestä jotain, oli se jokin vaikkapa vain sitä, että eläin on olemassa, että sitä voi tarkkailla.. Loppujen lopuksi lemmikki on aina ihmistä, hänen tarpeitaan varten. Vain villieläin toteuttaa eläimen todellista tehtävää – se on olemassa vain elääkseen.

Silti on ihanaa silittää vierailevaa tähteä, Esko-pupua ja nauttia siitä, että hän on olemassa..
