The very word

Colour over darkness. Finally, it is spring.

Värin voitto pimeydestä. Vihdoinkin, on kevät.

Were you a party to this abominable trick?

Dale: "Hey, I know what is wrong with your truck. It's your quote unquote pollution control. I heard on talk radio what you don't even need them. They are just egghead government plot."
Hank: "How is cutting down on pollution a government plot, Dale?"
Dale: "Open up your eyes man. They are trying to control global warming. Get it? Global."
Hank: "So what?"
Dale: "That's code for UN commissars telling Americans what temperature it's going to be in our outdoors. I say let the world warm up. See what Boutros-Boutros Ghali-Ghali thinks about that. We'll grow oranges in Alaska."
Hank: "Dale, you giblet-head, we live in Texas. It1s already 110 in the summer and if it gets one degree hotter, I am gonna kick your ass!"

A moment before

Even as child I was quite a little gourmet and enthusiastic experimenter of new tastes. There are many delightful food memories and experiences associated with my childhood (like recently catched fish smoked on the lakeside, slowly (in a baking oven) cooked Karelian hot pot, fresh blueberries and rasberries straight fron the bushes, self-grown vegetables and berries from our own vegetable garden and so forth).

Even though I consider myself to be quite open-minded, I always thought that I would never be able to eat raw ground meat (with a raw egg). Despite my prejudice, last summer in France I ordered a steak tartare - and I was sold. It is really rewarding to try out new foods and it is interesting to realize, how one can surprise oneself - world is full of new, pleasing, unusual and diverse tastes (also strange, unidentified, grotesque and alienating tastes), but without an open mind for experience one will never know them.

Here are some food memories from the end of 1970's and the beginning of 1980's (I was about 3-4 years then).

- Porcini cooked in butter (This is my very first food memory. My mother and I collected porcini from the woods behind my grandparents' house. I remember that it was difficult to walk in the woods (because I was so small) but that it was easy for me to find the porcini (because I was so little :)). When we returned to my grandparents' house, my mother cooked the porcini in cast iron pan using only butter - and I ate like I'd never seen food before :)).
- Leipäjuusto with cloudberries (My godmother always served this as a dessert, when we visited her. She and her husband went every year to Lapland to pick cloudberries. I could never get enough of this. Perhaps this is source of my cheese enthusiasm? :))
- Pasta alla carbonara in a restaurant (This is my first visit to a restaurant, that I can remember. A new Italian restaurant had opened to my little hometown in Ostrobothnia - with red and white checkered tablecloth and all - and my parents and their friends wanted to go and try the place out. This experince left a strong impression on me, because the food tasted so very different to what I was used to eating at home, but still delicious. I was amazed!)

Seuraavassa muutamia ruokamuistoja 1970-1980 luvun taitteesta (jolloin olin siis 3-4-vuotias)

- Voissa paistetut herkkutatit (Tämä on ihan ensimmäinen ruokamuistoni.
- Pasta alla carbonara ravintolassa (Ensimmäinen kertani ravintolassa, minkä muistan. Pienelle kotipaikkakunnalleni Pohjanmaalle avattiin italialainen ravintola - punavalkoruudullisine pöytäliinoineen kaikkineen - ja vanhempani ja heidän ystävänsä halusivat mennä kokeilemaan paikkaa. Tapahtuma jäi voimakkaasti mieleeni, koska ruoka oli täysin erimakuista, mitä kotona kotonani yleensä syötiin, mutta lumoavan hyvää..Olin ihmeissäni!)

Seeing things?

Middle-aged man, while smoking, tried to hit wild rabbits living in our yard with snow balls. Even though Helsinki has a problematic wild rabbit situation, I don't have to think twice, which I'd rather have living on our yard, the ancient curse of cities -rats - or little bunnies.

Keski-ikäinen mies, siinä tupakoidessaan, yritti osua lumipalloilla pihallamme asuviin villikaneihin. Vaikka Helsingissä onkin ongelmallinen kanitilanne, ei minun tarvitse kahta kertaa miettiä, kumman pihallemme mieluummin otan asumaan, kaupunkien ikivitsan - rotan - vai pienen pupun.

This joyous and auspicious occasion

This morning, after a long silence, birds were singing again.
