"He looked like the poet Shelley after a big night out with Lord Byron."

Nights of wine and roses

I was reading P.G. Wodehouse’s book "Galahad at Blandings" the other day and the phrase ”nights of wines and roses” stuck to me..

The phrase beautifully directs ones thoughts to the saying” days of wine and roses”, which is
originally from poet Ernest Dowson and his poem:

Vit{ae} Summa Brevis Spem nos Vetet Incohare Longam

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate;
I think they have no portion in us after

We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:

Out of a misty dream

Our path emerges for a while, then closes

Within a dream.

The writer of this poem
filled with yearning and emotion, lost eternity surely knew what he was writing about..

Luin P.G. Wodehousen kirjaa "Galahad at Blandings"ja silmääni sattui fraasi ”nights of wine and roses”, mikä jäi mieleeni kaikumaan..

Fraasi viittaa kauniisti sanontaan ”days of wine and roses”, joka on alunperin runoilija
Ernest Dowson’in (1867 - 1900) runosta peräisin:

Vit{ae} Summa Brevis Spem nos Vetet Incohare Longam

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,

Love and desire and hate;

I think they have no portion in us after

We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:

Out of a misty dream

Our path emerges for a while, then closes

Within a dream.

Tämän kaihon, katoavaisuuden ja tunteen pakahduttaman runon kirjoittaja on selvästi tiennyt, mistä hän kirjoitti...

Onnen hetket elämän, kuin
silmänräpäys,

huomaamatta

jo mennyttä.
