Acted from the best and soundest motives

The idea of a relationship where man’s job is constantly to give expensive presents, jewellery (and so on) to a woman is strange to me. I was once totally blown away when I witnessed a conversation between two young women where they bashed their old boyfriends for not giving expensive enough presents. More often then not this frame of thought involves an idea, which it’s mans duty to pay the cab fare or the cheque in a restaurant, even though both earn as much.

Where does this idea of the man as a cash-cow come from? Is it brought by upbringing or romantic literature with it’s old fashioned role models or perhaps particular types of tv-series? To me, listening that conversation, made me think that relationship for these women means monetary gain, that they would not accept a man who was not wealthy..

The best and nicest surprise in a relationship to me is high morning spirits, kisses and hugs, taking care of wellbeing of both or less poetically, clean dishes/laundry in a time, you’re too tired to do them yourself. And this goes both ways, obviously.

One part of equality is in my opinion, that as a women I hold my ground in the job market and make sure that I earn as much as my partner, so that I can by myself the kind of jewellery I like or by my partner a meal as well. Then we both can be economically equal i the relationship.

Minulle itselleni on täysin vieras ajatus, että ihmissuhteessa miehen on jatkuvasti lahjottava naista, eikä millään euron lahjoilla, vaan kalliilla tavaroilla, koruilla tms.

Mistä tällainen ajatus miehestä jonkintyyppisenä lypsylehmänä on peräisin? Onko syynä kotikasvatus, romattiset naistenkirjat vanhanaikasine roolimalleineen vai jotkin tietyt tv-sarjat?
