Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

What should you do if you receive an ugly/impractical/dull present? Should you just stick the gift in to some closet, from where you can retrieve it, when the gift giver comes for a visit? Or can you regift the gift to someone or take it into recycling, so that someone could actually use the item? What if attached with the gift are unpleasant memories of someone or some event? Are you forced to keep the gift anyway?

In this matter I’m very brutal. If I don’t like the gift, I’ll regift it. And I expect others to do the same with gifts I’ve given, if they don’t like them. That is why I mostly give gift certificates and so forth (not stuff), which are easy to regift also. Or then I’ll ask a direct request from the person receiving the gift. This way I will not filling anyone’s limited closet space with meaningless items, that one does not want to have there anyway.. The idea of a gift is to make someone happy, not to become a burden.

Mitä tehdä, jos saa ruman/epäkäytännöllisen/ikävän lahjan? Pitääkö lahja säilöä jonnekin kaappiin, josta se nostetaan esiin, kun kyseinen lahjanantaja saapuu kylään? Vai voiko lahjan antaa eteenpäin, viedä kierrätykseen tms., jolloin siitä voisi olla jollekin oikeasti hyötyä? Entä jos lahjaan liittyy ikäviä muistoja, jos se muistuttaa jostakin ikävästä ihmisestä tai tapahtumasta? Onko silloinkin pakko säilyttää lahja?

Itse olen asiassa tässä asiassa hyvin raaka. Jos lahja ei miellytä, annan sen eteenpäin. Näin oletan myös muiden tekevän antamieni lahjojen suhteen, jos ne eivät saajaa miellytä. Siksi pyrinkin antamaan esim. lahjakortteja tms. palveluita (en tavaroita), jotka nekin voi halutessaan antaa jollekin toiselle. Tai sitten kysyn lahjan saajalta suoran toiveen. Näin ei kenenkään rajallinen kaappitila täyty älyttömyyksistä, joita siellä ei oikeasti edes halua säilyttää… Lahjan ideahan on ilahduttaa vastaanottajaa, ei muodostua rasitteeksi.
