Bean & Crumpet went to Chez Dominique, Helsinki's only two Michelin star restaurant, to try their three course lunch menu. Overall it was a most pleasant experience. Miljeau of the restaurant is minimal and classy. Easy jazz music was playing in the background which gave the space more livelier setting and relaxed atmosphere.
Before starters they served a greeting from the chef, cornetto (a small cone basically) with parmesan and truffle foam. Needless to stay, anything with parmesan is topping B&C's lists. For starters they served tomato, crab and olive. Cherry tomato on this dish is probably the most juiciest tomato we've ever tasted. There was a kind of tapenade with the dish, slighly marinated shrimp and crispy salad. Composition of tastes and different textures was excellent.
Main course was veal, spring cabbage and truffle. Veal was succulently roasted and served with a cubicle-shaped piece of meat, which had slightly dryer texture. Truffle complemented the dish. Dessert came in the form of marinated fennel, foamed milk, small orange slices and two different ice creams/sorbets.
Bread was served between the courses, probably from Hans Välimäki's La Cochon Bakery, as well as tasty old school country butter. Water was distilled tap water with injected gas, made in the premises, excellent and ecological choice. Service was effective, nice, low key and not too stiff.
Overall B&C would rate Chez Dominique experience very high on X&Y axis of price and quality. It is easy to understand why people get hooked on this kind of fine dining. Experience is more than "eating". It's total bombardment of senses with fluffy silk bullets. Combination of different tastes in a way which produces new tastes, is something which only a very skillful and experienced chef can master and people are willing to pay for this kind of experience, because it brings something to new to their everyday lives. Negative side of this is of course the fact that for some people this becomes a form of snobbery and wankery, a way to brag with monetary assets. It can also be argued, is it sensible to pay 100 to 150 euros for 4 or 6 course menu? We say why not, if that is your thing. And the three course lunch for 29 euros (plus 5 euro charge for water) was a bargain. We will definately go again and probably try the evening menu(s) as well.

On helppoa ymmärtää, miksi ihmiset jäävät koukkuun fine diningiin.
