What makes a residence a home? Home is a different thing to someone, who has lived in the same place for a long time then to someone, who has moved a lot. To most homes are characterised by familiar belongings in their familiar places. Someone, who has lived in the same place for a long time, has memories attached to the home, for example tallness diagrams of the children drawn inside the clothes closet or marks made by pets (like the ones Esko the Bunny has made to floor panelling :)) To someone, who has moved a lot, even one familiar item, that always goes with, can make a place feel like home (to Crumpet, who has moved 10 times in the last 13 years that item is a picture of Buster Keaton).What is cosiness/homeliness? To some cosiness is messiness and personal belongings scattered around, in reach. To some it is neatness and order. To others big spaces are important, to some even confined spaces are enough. Some want to have their own yard; others wouldn’t want one for no love or for money. To some the buzz of the city is “the thing”, to others the calm of the countryside. Some prefer fancy décor; others don’t care at all. Others want loads of stuff, some very little.
I expect everyone appreciates the feeling of safety, that ones own home gives. At home one can be relaxed and comfortable; everything one needs one can find around them. Ones own home pleases ones own eye. And if one enjoys being at home and feels restful there (in every way) they are very lucky.

Mikä tekee asunnosta kodin? Koti on tietysti eri asia sille, joka on asunut samassa tilassa jo pitkään, kuin sille, joka on muuttanut usein. Useimmille kodin tekevät tutut tavarat omilla paikoillaan. Kauan samassa kodissa asuneille kotiin liittyvät muistot, vaikkapa lasten pituuskäyrät vaatekaapin oven sisäpuolella tai kotieläinten jättämät jäljet (kuten Esko-pupu jättämät jäljet lattialistoissa:)) Usein muuttaneelle kodin voi tehdä jokin tietty esine, joka kulkee aina mukana (Crumpetilla, joka on muuttanut viimeisen 13 vuoden aikana 10 kertaa, se on kuva Buster Keatonista).
Mitä sitten on kotoisuus? Joillekin kotoisaa on sotku ja omat tavarat hujan hajan, käden ulottuvilla. Jollekin on tärkeää siisteys ja tavarat järjestyksessä. Joillekin on tärkeää iso tila ja toisille riittää vähempikin. Jotkut haluavat oman pihan, toiset eivät sellaista halua isolla rahallakaan. Joillekin on tärkeää kaupungin säpinä ympärillä, toisille maaseudun hiljaisuus. Joillekin on tärkeää hieno sisustus, toisille ei niinkään. Toiset haluavat paljon tavaraa, toiset vähän.
Varmaan kaikki arvostavat turvallisuuden tunnetta, jonka oma koti antaa. Kotona on rento sekä helppo olla ja kaikkea tarvittavaa löytyy ympäriltä. Oma koti miellyttää omaa silmää. Ja jos omassa kodissa viihtyy ja siellä on hyvä olla (kaikin tavoin) on ihmisellä hyvä olla.
