At the peak of one's form

The pros and cons of Kumpula and Stadikka (two lidos in Helsinki):

Kumpula

+ Extremely clean dressing- and washing spaces
+ Warm atmosphere, loads of happy lil’ones and cozy size resting area (grass and rocks).
+ Often without music (play list radio stations), so that one can listen to beautiful sound scenery; splashing of the water, children’s screams of joy and wind in the trees (yippy, summer:))
+ Licensed to sell alcoholic drinks.
+ Nice café, where one can find eatable French fries and chicken burger :)
+ Ice cream stand
+ Plenty of flotation devices for water joggers
+/- No seagulls, but then again little birdies in the café
+/- A family place
+/- Only a few familiar swimmers
- Short swimming pool, just 25 meters and no separate diving pool.
- A bit further from the centrum. A bit difficult to reach.
- One can find only few restaurants/ terraces in walking distance.

Stadikka

+ Long pool, 50 meters and large diving pool plus two pools for children. The 50 meter pool is deep enough.
+ Large resting area (grass and rocks), where one can “hide” if one wants to.
+ Waterslide
+ In the centre of Helsinki
+ Plenty of restaurants/ terraces in walking distance.
+ Close to Linnanmäki and Töölö Bay
+ Short walking distance to everywhere
+/- Kind of “meat stand”, because younger crowd tends to spend time here, to look at others and to be looked at (some like this :))
+/- Plenty of familiar swimmers
- Café in the swimming area is only occasionally open and there is hardly anything eatable there.
- Unlicensed to sell alcoholic drinks.
- Worn dressing- and washing spaces. Especially the lockers could do with remodelling. Men’s dressing room tends to get rather stinky late in the summer :)
- Seagulls, so be aware with your food or they’ll snatch it away.
- Unfortunately music (play list radio stations) is often played
- Floatation devices for water joggers are scarce, especially in the rush hours.
- There are some regular water joggers (real trolls) who think the pool is just for them :)
-----------
Kumpulan ja Stadikan maauimaloiden plussat ja miinukset:

Kumpula

+ Erittäin siistit pukeutumis- ja suihkutilat.
+ Lämmin tunnelma, paljon iloisia pikkunakeroita ja kotoisan kokoinen oleskelualue (nurtsia ja kallioita).
+ Usein ilman musiikkia (soittolistaradiokanavia), jolloin voi kuunnella upeaa äänimaisemaa: veden loisketta, lasten ilonkiljahduksia ja tuulen huminaa puissa (jee, kesä!:))
+ Anniskeluoikeudet.
+ Hyvä kahvila, jossa ihan syötävät ranskalaiset ja kanahampurilainen:)
+ Jäätelökioski
+ Usein vesijuoksuvöitä vapaana
+ /- Ei lokkeja, mutta pikkulintuja kahvilakatoksessa.
+ / - Perhepaikka.
+/- Vähän tuttuja uimareita.
- Lyhyt allas, vain 25 metriä eikä erillistä hyppyallasta.
- Vähän kauempana keskustassa. Melko huonot yhteydet.
- Vain muutama ruokapaikka/terassi kävelyetäisyydellä.

Stadikka:

Erityisesti kaapit kaipaisivat kunnostusta. Miesten pukuhuoneessa alkaa olla aika pinttynyt haju loppukesästä. :)
- Lokkeja, joten on oltava tarkkana kaiken näkyvillä olevan ruuan kanssa.
- Valitettavan usein äänessä soittolistaradiokanavat, joita ei pääse pakoon minnekään.
- Ruuhka-aikana on vaikea saada vesijuoksuvyötä
- Vesijuoksupuolella kantapeikkoja, jotka luulevat omistavansa paikan :)

Home sweet home

What makes a residence a home? Home is a different thing to someone, who has lived in the same place for a long time then to someone, who has moved a lot. To most homes are characterised by familiar belongings in their familiar places. Someone, who has lived in the same place for a long time, has memories attached to the home, for example tallness diagrams of the children drawn inside the clothes closet or marks made by pets (like the ones Esko the Bunny has made to floor panelling :)) To someone, who has moved a lot, even one familiar item, that always goes with, can make a place feel like home (to Crumpet, who has moved 10 times in the last 13 years that item is a picture of Buster Keaton).

What is cosiness/homeliness? To some cosiness is messiness and personal belongings scattered around, in reach. To some it is neatness and order. To others big spaces are important, to some even confined spaces are enough. Some want to have their own yard; others wouldn’t want one for no love or for money. To some the buzz of the city is “the thing”, to others the calm of the countryside. Some prefer fancy décor; others don’t care at all. Others want loads of stuff, some very little.

I expect everyone appreciates the feeling of safety, that ones own home gives. At home one can be relaxed and comfortable; everything one needs one can find around them. Ones own home pleases ones own eye. And if one enjoys being at home and feels restful there (in every way) they are very lucky.
------------
Useimmille kodin tekevät tutut tavarat omilla paikoillaan. Kauan samassa kodissa asuneille kotiin liittyvät muistot, vaikkapa lasten pituuskäyrät vaatekaapin oven sisäpuolella tai kotieläinten jättämät jäljet (kuten Esko-pupu jättämät jäljet lattialistoissa:)) Usein muuttaneelle kodin voi tehdä jokin tietty esine, joka kulkee aina mukana (Crumpetilla, joka on muuttanut viimeisen 13 vuoden aikana 10 kertaa, se on kuva Buster Keatonista).

Mitä sitten on kotoisuus? Joillekin kotoisaa on sotku ja omat tavarat hujan hajan, käden ulottuvilla. Jollekin on tärkeää siisteys ja tavarat järjestyksessä. Joillekin on tärkeää iso tila ja toisille riittää vähempikin. Jotkut haluavat oman pihan, toiset eivät sellaista halua isolla rahallakaan. Joillekin on tärkeää kaupungin säpinä ympärillä, toisille maaseudun hiljaisuus. Joillekin on tärkeää hieno sisustus, toisille ei niinkään. Toiset haluavat paljon tavaraa, toiset vähän.

Varmaan kaikki arvostavat turvallisuuden tunnetta, jonka oma koti antaa.

What's in, what's out - summerfoods

In just now:

1. Rucola /rocket (in a feta salad, in a Croque-Monsieur, in Insalata Caprese..mmm)
2. Tomato-fresh basil-mozzarella soup (great in the summer and in the winter)
3. Steak (meat is must, either on the grill or in the pan and marination has to be selfmade, of course)
4. Berries (this summer’s surprise were the Spanish strawberries sold outside Stockamann’s of which Bean & Crumpet bought a 2 kg box at a time..)
5. Guacamole (selfmade of course:))

Out just now:

1. Finnish summersoup (it’s all right, but just all right)
2. Herring (too salty, can only bee consumed few times a summer)
3. Ice-cream (too sweat, could they add only half the sugar?)
4. Parsley (very healthy, but why o why do they still garnish dishes with it in restaurants?)
5. Candy/sweets (why eat sugar with colouring and preservatives not to mention other “poisons”?

----------
In juuri nyt:

1. Rukola (fetasalaatissa, croque-monsieur -leivissä, insalada capresen lisänä..mmm)
2. Tomaatti-tuorebasilika-mozzarellakeitto (toimii kesällä ja talvella)
3. Pihvi (liha on must, joko grillattuna tai ihan kotoisasti paistinpannulla, ilman kaupan marinaadia tietty)
4. Marjat (kesän yllättäjät olivat espanjalaiset mansikat, joita B&C osti Stockan edestä aina 2 kg laatikon kerrallaan..)
5. Guoacamole (itse tehty tietty :))

Out juuri nyt:

1. Kesäkeitto (ihan hyvää, mutta vain ihan hyvää..)
2. Sillit (ei uppoa monta kertaa kesässä, liian tuhti suola-annos)
3. Jäätelö (aivan liian makeaa, eikö sokerin määrää voisi puolittaa?)
5. Karkki (miksi syödä sokeria väriaineilla ja säilöntäaineilla ynnä muilla ”myrkkyillä”?)

Pretended ecstasy

What makes a woman or a man to fake an orgasm? And more importantly, who is the winner in that situation? The partner that thinks is satisfaying his/her companion or the one not getting the satisfaction? This is an interesting question.

I believe that most of times the reason for faking an orgasm can be found in ones inability to express ones own sexual needs to ones parner. Perhaps the lenght of the foreplay, practiced positions or the lack of closeness or intimacy in the relationship are obstacles in mutual satisfaction. For women there is still (unfortunately) basfulness – expressing ones sexual desires might feel shameful (many women are still raised up to be seduced in a relationship, not to be the seducer). Actively presenting sexual needs might bring to mind the image of nymfomaniac or ”a dirty woman”, therefore one is unable to express ones own feelings and needs. Of course, problems in a relationship can many times be seen in the sexual area too. If everyday life is nothing but bickering then probably ”the romping” is the last thing in ones mind..

I believe that healthy sexual self-esteem should be everyones priviledge, regardless of ones sex. Perhaps the best thing would be to talk about ones needs frankly early on in the relationship and not for example ten years into the relationship. Years of faking will undoubtedly leave deep scarring for both parties after beeing revealed. When sexual fulfilment is mutual, both parties will be winners. And this way the relationship has one more presupposition to succeed.
--------------

Stones

Whilst on sick bed Crumpet is reading the favorite (or one of them :)) detective novelist Rex Stout and his book The Red Box from 1937.

As I was reading, this sentance caught my attention:

”...you think that words are like stones one throws at people to make them stunned”

(Translated from finnish to english by Crumpet)

I believe that everybody some times uses words as ”stones” against other people. Most regret doing so. Some stone others every day and don't know anything else.

Some try to build stones in to bridges between people, thoughts and worlds.

Which of these did you do today?

---------

Jotkut kivittävät toisia päivittäin, eivätkä he osaa muuta.

Jotkut pyrkivät rakentamaan kivistä yhdistäviä siltoja ihmisten, ajatusten ja maailmojen välille.

Kumpaa sinä teit tänään?

Love according to Bubbles

Quote of the day:

"Here's what I know, Ricky. If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, ya own it. If it doesn't, ya don't own it! And if it doesn't, you're an asshole, just like you!"

Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys tv-series

The quote resembles one made by author Richard Bach which is as follows:

"If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they're yours. If they don't, they never were."

--------

Bubbles Trailer Park Boys -televisiosarjassa

Lainaus muistuttaa kirjailija Richard Bachin sanomaa:

”Jos rakastat jotain, päästä se vapaaksi. Jos he palaavat luoksesi, he ovat sinun. Jos he eivät palaa, he eivät koskaan olleetkaan.”

Welrome Hotel, Rome - a home away from home

Bean & Crumpet is compelled to write about Welrome Hotel in Termini, Rome. This little hotel is run by a couple, Mary and Carlo. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and relaxed in the hotel and guide you to the best sights and restaurants when heading out. Mary looked after us and made sure that we were aware of the pickpockets lurking everywhere (our mamma away from home) :)

The rooms are very clean and nice, and the air condition is a great plus. Bean and Crumpet highly recommend this establishment and remember: Welrome is extremely popular these days, due to great feedback in the Internet so make sure to book as early as possible.

Bean & Crumpet on suorastaan pakotettu kirjoittamaan Welrome Hotellista, Terminissä, Roomassa.

B&C suosittelevat tätä hotellia ja muistuttavat: Welrome on nykyisin erittäin suosittu (erittäin positiivisen netti-palautteen takia), joten varaus kannattaa tehdä ensitilassa.

Quite, quite.

Is it a sign of getting older, that one prefers to sit in the front of a bus/tram (near the safety of the driver) instead the back (away from the authorities)? I think so..
---------

Heavy weather

Travel photography is a form of photography practised by almost everyone treating on this earth. Unfortunately it is often the most boring form, together with taking photos of your children or pets. In the age of digital photography one can capture ones hole trip from start to finish (from your doorstep and back again). Of course this is “a sin” which I myself commit also:) One can wonder, is there anything worse than to look through a couple of hundred photos from your friend’s trip? This flicking through comes with almost painful narrative: first they wonder what the picture is about (because it’s out of focus) and then they wonder where the picture was taken (because they have taken pictures of everything, what they have seen). On top of everything the pictures are often incredibly dull: general views, that don’t present properly the beauty, size or richness of colour of their subject.

On the other hand, digital photography has been a great equalizer: because one does not need to develop the pictures (which is relatively expensive) to look at them later, many are financially able to capture their experiences. Even though the quantity of photos has increased due digitalisation, it is interesting to ponder, which amount of them will survive to following generations (just for the reason that people don’t develop them anymore) and which will be forever lost in to byte space.

-------------
Matkavalokuvaaminen on lähes jokaisen pallontallaajan harrastama valokuvauksen laji.

Toisaalta digikuvaus on tuonut uutta tasa-arvoa valokuvaamiseen: koska kuvia ei tarvitse kehittää (mikä on suhteellisen kallista) voidakseen katsella niitä myöhemmin, on yhä useammalla taloudellisesti mahdollista ikuistaa omia kokemuksiaan. Vaikka valokuvaaminen onkin lisääntynyt huimasti digitaalisuuden myötä, on mielenkiintoista miettiä, mikä määrä kuvista säilyy tuleville polville, (juuri siitä syystä, koska kuvia ei enää kehitetä) vaan häviää bittiavaruuteen lopullisesti.
