Right about now life tastes pretty sweet..
We've booked our trip to Paris in October - this time we are also going to pop to Mediterranian, to Marseille (Bean wanted to taste - inspired by Rick Stein's French Odyssey - real bouillabaisse, so TGV will whisk us there, 660 kilometers in only three hours). We've decided on our menu next weekend - it's fantastic to get to try new ingridients, methods of cooking and familiar tastes from France. This week we're going to get some new Bottna dishes, a sauce boat from Kokkipuoti and new dessert dishes - our collection of dishes keeps on growing.
On Thursday we are having a joint holiday & working from home day - coming up: a romantic lunch at home. Dvd is playing the first series of Mad Men - it's always fun to watch a period piece that is made meticulously. Kitchen renovation is in the horizon of these two little chefs - even though our kitchen was done only few years ago, it's style does not suit us or the period of our building and further more, in usability leaves a lot be desired for - so coming up 1950's inspired looks, induction cooker, convection oven and diswasher and storage space to all our dishes & cooking tools & equipment.

Juuri nyt elämä tuntuu aika mukavalta..
Lokakuun Pariisin matka on buukattu - tällä kertaa piipahdamme myös Välimeren rannalla Marseillessa (Papu halusi maistaa - Rick Stein'in Ranskan makumatka tv-sarjan inspiroimana - aitoa bouillabaissea, joten TGV kiidättää meidät kolmessa tunnissa 660 kilometrin päähän). Viikonlopun menu on päätetty - ihana päästä kokeilemaan uusia raaka-aineita, valmistustapoja ja Ranskasta tuttuja makuja. Tällä viikolla haemme lisää Bottna-astioita, kastikekulhon Kokkipuodista ja ostamme uudet jälkiruoka-astiat - astiakokoelmamme senkun karttuu.
Torstaina vietämme vapaapäivän & etätyöpäivän yhdistelmää kotona - tiedossa romanttinen lounas oman ruokapöydän ääressä. Dvd:ssä pyörii Mad Men'in ensimmäinen tuotantokausi - pieteetillä toteutettua ajankuvaa on aina nasta katsoa. Keittiöremontti siintää kahden pikkukokin haaveissa - vaikka keittiömme on vain muutama vuosi sitten remontoitu, se ei vastaa tyyliltään meitä, eikä asuintalomme aikakauden henkeä tai käytettävyydeltään tarpeitamme - tulossa on siis 1950-luvun inspiroimaa ulkonäköä, induktioliesi, kiertoilmauuni ja tiskikone sekä säilytystilaa kaikille astioille & kokkaamisessa tarvittaville välineille & laitteille.

Maybe it's time to reveal here in our blog that we got married, some time ago (our month's trip to Paris was actually a real honeymoon). We eloped - in secret from everyone & just the two of us - and managed to surprise all those close to us & friends. The day was planned to our taste; it was relaxed, delicious and filled with laughter. Pictures of the beautiful day are a lovely remembrance to us, thanks to Oka Morikawa..
----------

You stay in the boat
This time in Paris we concentrated in dwelling & marvelling and in eating & drinking - in stead of accomplishing. Still, here as follows are some highlights from our swivelling..
Musée de l’Orangerie (here tourists silently admire Claude Monet's Nymphs, but Paul Klee's exhibition downstairs was more to our taste), food markets in Quartier Latin (markets by the exits of metro stations are a delight for food tourist, unfortunately you don't find the time to try everything), Le Jeu de Paume (museum of contemporary art with emphasis on photography and video installations), Shakespeare and Company (more like a tourist attraction than a book shop, but a saving angel for a person looking for books in English), Bon Marché department store (food department - food heaven part 1), Musée Rodin (a rare and magnificent collection of works by one artist alone),
Musée Arts Décoratifs (design objects from everyday home artifacts to clothes and jewellery - fun and reasonably sized space to wander around), Parc des Buttes Chaumont (the trip was worth it - a lovely oasis without the tourist hordes), Parc Floral and Paris Jazz Festival (take your blanket and some food to go with you to this lovely and green park - on two different visits we got to hear Hyperactive Kid, Von Schlippenbach/Takase Duo, Oriental Music Ensemble and Anouar Brahem Quartet), Galleries Lafayette (food deparment - food heaven part 2), Jardin de Luxembourg (an green island for adults and childen in the midst of it all), Eiffel Tower fireworks on July 14th (what a way to celebrate national day with style -rockets exploding to music with hundreds of thousands eyes staring), Richelieu wing of Musée du Louvre (this time we concentrated in European Art from 13th century to 19th century), Paris Plages (you can have a beach holiday in Paris - just sink your toes in to the sand), Rue Mouffetards (stencil art & restaurants & food stores - what else we could hope for), Jardin des Tuileries (enjoy lunch under the trees or take a nap - chairs are designed to be slept in).

Tällä kertaa Pariisissa keskityimme oleiluun & ihmettelyyn sekä syömiseen & juomiseen - suorittamisen sijaan.Seuraavassa kuitenkin joitakin kiertelyn & kaartelun huippukohtia..
Musée de l’Orangerie (täällä turistit hiljentyvät hartaina - kuin kirkossa - Claude Monet Nymfien äärelle, mutta meitä kosketti enemmän esillä ollut Paul Kleen näyttely), ruokatorit Latinalaisessa korttelissa (metropysäkkien uloskäynneille viikonloppuisin putkahtavat kojut riemastuttavat ruokamatkaajaa - valitettavasti kaikkea ei ehdi kokeilla), Le Jeu de Paume (nykytaiteen museo, jossa painotus oli valokuva- ja videotaiteessa), Shakespeare and Company (enemmän turistikohde kuin kirjakauppa, kylläkin pelastava enkeli englanninkielistä luettavaa kaipaavalle), Bon Marché tavaratalo (ruokaosasto - ruokataivas osa 1), Musée Rodin (harvinaisen upea kokonaisuus yhden taiteiljan töitä), Musée Arts Décoratifs (kaikkea muotoiluun liittyvää kodin esineistöstä vaatteisiin ja koruihin - hauska & sopivan kokoinen kiertelykohde), Parc des Buttes Chaumont (matka on vaivan arvoinen - ihana keidas ilman turistilaumoja), Parc Floral & Paris Jazz Festival (varaa mukaan viltti & eväät tähän aivan kauniiseen & vehreään puistoon - kahdella eri vierailukerralla saimme kuulla Hyperactive Kidiä, Von Schlippenbach/Takase-duoa, Oriental Music Ensembleä ja Anouar Brahem kvartettia), Galaries Lafayette (ruokaosasto - ruokataivas osa 2), Jardin de Luxemburg (lasten ja aikuisten keidas keskellä kaikkea), Eiffel tornin ilotulitukset 14.7.(näin juhlitaan kansallispäivää tyylillä -raketit räjähtelivät musiikin tahtiin satojen tuhansien silmäparien tuijottaessa haltioituneena), Louvren Richelieu siipi (tällä kertaa meillä tutustumisen kohteena mm. eurooppalainen taide 1200-1850), Paris Plages (Pariissakin pääsee rantalomalle - upota varpaat hiekkaan), Rue Mouffetard (sapluunataidetta & ravintoloita & ruokakauppoja - mitä muuta voisimme toivoa), Jardin des Tuileries (nauti lounasta puiden katveessa tai ota torkut - tuolit on muotoiltu nukkumista silmällä pitäen)

Owner of the Showbiz Deli: "I get it in a drum from a catalogue. It's a lot easier than Italian food, like my last place. Did you know you have to heat up I-talian food?"

I see his lordship is fishing on the lake
This time of the year Finns have crayfish parties, so we decided to have our own little crustacean party also..
Music
Frank Sinatra Collection
Start
Blini with roe, smetana, pickled cucamber & honey and mushroom salad
Main
Lobster with aioli & mayonnaise
Afters
Limoncello
Limoncello strawberries with whipped cream
Recipe for blins is from Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, which we saved ages ago. Preparation of the dough began day before, as the dough had to sour overnight. Bean mastered the art of frying after few practice blins.
Steininger Riesling 2009 was a find. Taste was light and fresh and complimented blins and lobster well. Tip for eating a lobster: it´s quite messy business, so do we don´t recommend dressing in your number one attire for this task. Idea for limoncello strawberries we got from restaurant in Rome, were we had them for desert.
We will definately try these delicacies again.

Limoncellolla marinoidut mansikat kermavaahdon kera
Blien ohjeen nappasimme jo ajat sitten Helsingin sanomista.

I don't know how to thank you
It's difficult for Finns to be polite or accept politeness from others. It goes something like this..
At the door of a department store. Crumpet spots an middle-aged woman approaching the door and opens it, to let her in. Immediately the woman stops and says: "No, you go!".
---------

I could scarcely credit my senses
When travelling the little things that differ from every day life back home, often raise some big questions. Well, maybe not big questions, but many questions.
Lets take an example from Paris.
As you are walking around the city you can not help to notice the constant water trickles which run on the edges of the streets. Some streets in the same area are dry, when others are not. The logic behind this dry/wet equasion escapes you. From time to time you came across these rolls of ruggs (always different kinds - pictured) which are placed on the side of the streets and are wet, if you accidentally happen to step on one of them. Sometimes you might see that one of these rugs steers the water into a certain direction. Sometimes you might end up to the source of the water (pictured), from where the water gushes on to street. From the Internet you find some information on the subject, mainly that the reason for all this is to clean the streets, as you had expected.
Even still an endless amount of questions remain: when did this practice begun? Who invented it? Is the water drinkable? Why don't they spread the water thoroughly on to the streets with machines or with those brooms the street cleaners use every day (that would be a final farewell to dog poop), but instead the water only flows/cleans on the edges. Does the water have other functions (keep the rain sewers clean, improve air quality)? How is the water timed area by area? What kind of system operates the whole thing? Is this watering a daily event or are there perhaps pauses, for example, on holidays? How much water is run on the streets every day? How do they clean the water afterwards? Is this system truly effective?
Lets take an example from Paris.

And of course the most important and strangest questions to the wonderer: where do they get those rolls of rugs, who gets them, is there a special store that sells them and are they expensive or durable?
These are the things the little traveller bounces inside his/her head.
Well, one more reason to return to Paris, to solve this strange little mystery..

Netistä löydät asiasta vähän lisätietoa, eli veden tarkoituksena on puhdistaa katuja, kuten olit arvellutkin.
Silti lukematon määrä kysymyksiä jää: milloin käytäntö on aloitettu? Kuka sen on keksinyt? Onko vesi juomakelpoista? Miksi vettä ei levitetä kaduille kunnolla esim. koneella/harjoilla, jollla työntekijät katuja päivittäin putsaavat (päästäisiin eroon siitä koirakakasta vihdoin) vaan se virtaa pelkästään kadun reunan ja jalkakäytävän kanttikiven viertä pitkin. Onko vedellä muuta funktiota (pitää sadevesiviemärit avoinna, parantaa ilmanlaatua?) Miten vedentulo on ajoitettu alueittain? Mistä se on ajastettu? Millainen järjestelmä on käytössä? Onko kastelu päivittäistä vai onko esim. pyhäpäivinä tauko? Paljonko vettä lasketaan kadulle jokaisella kerralla? Miten vesi puhdistetaan?
